A Day Spent in Matthews, NC

Matthews offers a slower change of pace compared to Uptown Charlotte, even though it is only 25 miles away. The city of Matthews sits between Charlotte and Union County and offers small-town activities like festivals and farmer’s markets.

Overall, Matthews is a great place to visit for the day or even reside. There are a ton of great restaurants, retail shops and nightlife spots in Downtown Matthews and in surrounding areas.

Read more below to see some of my favorite spots -- you can even hit all of them in one day:

In The Morning

Start your morning with a cup of coffee from Brakeman’s Coffee & Supply, located in the heart of Matthews, NC. This is a great place to grab a coffee, tea or treat to-go and walk around Downtown Matthews, read a book on the shaded patio out back or work remotely inside the quaint shop itself.

At Noon

There are several lunch spots in Matthews that serve a variety of different cuisines. You can grab sushi and other Asian fusion options from New Zealand Cafe, watch your favorite sports team bring home a victory with a plate of wings at Kristopher’s Sports Bar or devour a serving of enchiladas from El Valle, which has been around for over 20 years.

During The Afternoon

Take a walk through Downtown Matthews. There are a variety of local shops to peruse such as Renfrow Hardware, which sells a variety of gardening products, locally sourced goods and many other products.

After shopping around, you can drive a short distance to Squirrel Lake Park where you can walk around the 36-acre park, bring your kids to the playground or play a round of disc golf on the 12-hole course.

In the Evening

Kick start your evening with a charcuterie board made from cut-to-order cheeses at The Loyalist Market. This shop carries around 40 artisanal cheeses and 20 different styles of charcuterie.

After your appetizer, you can head up the street to Seaboard Brewing for a beer or glass of wine and a pizza made from The Exchange Pizza Depot shack onsite. The Exchange serves classic pizzas along with creative weekly pizzas such as Chili Frito Pie and Pickle-ickle-ickle.   The Portrait Gallery is the perfect place for an after dinner cocktail and a home made dessert.  The Portrait Gallery's patio is also a favorite Sunday brunch spot!
